Guide to Trials 2016-2017
We have been doing the Guide to Trials for some time now, but there is always something new to learn; so whether it is your first year or your 14th, please take a moment to read. Trials may seem far away, but it is never too soon to learn about the postseason.
TRIALS: February 18, 2017 Plainville; 8:00 warmup (9&10’s)
1:00 warmup (11 & 12’s)
February 19, 2017 Watertown; 8:00 warmup (8&under Championships)
1:00 warmup (13 & Overs)
All swimmers participate in trials and will compete against swimmers from all Yankee League Teams.
TRIALS IS MANDATORY AND IS THE CULMINATION OF AN ENTIRE SEASONS WORTH OF WORK ON THE PART OF THE COACHES PARENTS AND SWIMMERS. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MEET OF THE YEAR AND MUST NOT BE MISSED. An unexcused absence from trials is the equivalent of quitting the team.
TRIALS FEES: Trials Fees are $8.00 per swimmer and are due December 2, 2016. Trials Fees are applied to the cost of the meet including officials and awards. All swimmers that have not informed the coaching staff that they are missing trials by 12/02/16 still owe fees, as the coaching staff has already began the long task of setting trials lineups.
What to do: Please be especially sure to arrive prior to warmup. Warmup time and space is limited due to the increased number of swimmers, the facility will be much more crowded and hectic than usual, and the coaches will be very busy. It is very important to allow enough travel time so that you arrive early enough to check in with the coaches and change to be ready to enter the pool as soon as warmup starts. Also, be sure that all of your swimmers’ belongings are clearly marked with his or her name.
Parents please check to see if the team has enough volunteers for timing, concessions and everything else we need. The more that volunteer, the less everyone has to do.
How it works: All swimmers will compete in two individual events and between 0-2 relays. Their performance determines who makes it to Finals.
8 & unders: 8&unders who place in the top 3 of their event will advance to All Stars, and will continue to practice with the team until the end of the season. Coach Eric will call any swimmers that qualify to let them know that they made All Stars. There will be an awards ceremony following 8 & Under Championships.
9 & olders: Any swimmer age 9 or older that places in the top 14 of his or her event(s) will qualify for Finals (the top 12 will definitely swim, while anyone who places 13th or 14th will serve as an alternate.) Any swimmer that swims in a relay that places top 6 will also qualify for Finals. Coach Sean will tell and or call any swimmer that makes it to Finals.
If your swimmer does not make it past trials: Than their season has ended, and practice is over for them for the year. Trials are extremely competitive and swimmers should not feel bad if they do not qualify: all we ask for is their best effort. If they do that they have nothing to be ashamed of.
If your season is over, that does not mean that you still can’t help out. Finals and All-Stars are both held at our pool, and is tremendous opportunity to show our team spirit to the rest of the league. All swimmers are welcome to attend these two meets. In addition, these three meets are very lucrative fundraisers for our team and allows us to supply gifts to the team, afford awards and trophies to the swimmers, and offset the cost of our banquet. In order for this to be as successful as possible, WE NEED YOUR HELP. We need as many parents as possible for timing, concession supplies and sales, and a number of other important tasks. Please see any coach or parents club officer for how you can help.
FINALS: Saturday, February 25 2017, West Haven, 8:00 a.m. warmup.
Finals features all swimmers 9 and older who placed in the top 12 of their events, as well as the top 6 relays in each age group. Swimmers who participate in finals earn points for their teams, with the team with the most points crowned champion. Awards will be presented after the swimming concludes. Like in trials, please be early, mark your swimmers belongings, and please please please volunteer to help out.
Swimmers who place in the top 3 of each event automatically qualify for All-Stars. Swimmers who do not place in the top 3 still have a chance to qualify as part of the Double Qualification Rule. For an explanation of the Double Qualification rule, http://yankeeswimleague.webs.com/allstarsdoublequalrule.htm Any swimmer that qualifies for All Stars will be called by Coach Sean and will need to attend a very important practice session on Sunday morning. Swimmers that do not qualify for All Stars are done for the season, but are to be congratulated on making it so far. If your season is over, please remember to volunteer to make All Stars a success. Awards will be presented for all individual and relay swims, as well as the regular season Team Champions and the Top 3 teams at Championships.
ALL STARS: Saturday, March 4, 2017, West Haven, 8:00 a.m. warmup.
The All Star meet is a special exhibition for everyone that qualified: a pentathlon where each athlete swims all four strokes and an Individual Medley. The swimmer with the fastest cumulative time will be the winner. Awards will be presented after the meet is concluded. Also of note is the Coaches’ relay after swimming ends – be sure to cheer on West Haven as they go for the gold! Please make sure to volunteer. Swimmers that qualify for All Stars will be required to pay All Stars Dues, cost TBA, which help to defray the costs of the meet.
After All Stars, our season is over. Dates to remember after our season ends are the banquet, and our spring season (dates TBA). If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to ask and please volunteer in any way you can!
